Our next Service Unit Planning meeting will be on Aug 27th at 6:00 at the Girl Scout office in the Hamilton Plaza shopping center – 216 W. Hamilton Ave, State College. Susan Smith, our membership coordinator, will distribute volunteer incentives at that time. If you are unable to attend, please ask another adult from your troop to go so your group won’t miss getting important information about the upcoming troop year!
As we get ready for another year of Girl Scouts, we need your help. GSHPA Service Unit 416 is a volunteer run organization. Our website is operated by volunteers. Our camporees are run by volunteers. Our Service Unit events (parades, movies, skating, world thinking day, cookie rally, etc.) are all run by volunteers. If you enjoy participating in service-unit-run events and meeting girls (and leaders) from other troops, please volunteer. You do not need to be a troop leader or even an adult – these important positions can be filled by any girl aged 14 and up or adult members.
First, we need to elect two delegates plus alternates to represent us to GSHPA. Delegates are the voice for our local Girl Scout community, vote on policies, and play a part in GSHPA’s governance
Second, we also need volunteers to serve on the various committees (camp, bridging, etc) that plan Service Unit events.
Third, we need facilitators for archery and canoeing. GSHPA regulations prohibit us from offering archery or canoeing at our camporees without qualified facilitators and as a result, there was no archery at this last summer camporee. If you want us to be able to offer archery at fall camporee, we need your help.
And we are still looking for a talented girl artist to create a community logo!

On September 22 – 24 we will climb Mount Olympus, explore the halls of Valhalla, and hike the Cedar Forest from the Epic of Gilgamesh while earning our Creative Play badges. Girls will compete in challenges, play games, and meet mythological creatures. There will be plenty of camp activities too: campfires, archery*, canoeing*, and Ga-Ga ball.
Registration for Fall Camporee will open August 1 and run through September 3 (or until camp is full).
Although camp rental rates have increased significantly, we are fortunate to have our weekend sponsored by a generous gift from an anonymous donor. The cost for this event is $15 per scout or $5 per adult, which covers food (snacks and dinner on Saturday) and program materials. Troops (of any level) can elect to spend the weekend (Friday night or Saturday night or both) or attend Saturday only.

Cadettes, come join us for a Breathe! Journey Weekend on 10/27/2017 - 10/29/2017!
Are you planning to earn your Silver Award but still need to complete a Journey? Join us for the Breathe Journey Weekend. We will explore the Air Around Us in multiple ways including kite flying, baking, aromatherapy, and yoga. We’ll talk about pollution, careers related to air, and how we can work to reduce air/noise/light pollution. The Take Action portion will be included in the weekend so girls who attend will leave with the Journey complete.
The Journey is open to all girls in grades 6-8 who are registered Girl Scouts. Troops need to provide adult leadership to maintain proper ratios. Girls attending without a troop will be assigned to a group for the weekend to ensure proper ratios are in place.
We need adult helpers, especially if you have an “air” related talent. Leaders and parents will be asked to run stations, assist with cooking, supervise girls, and other responsibilities as needed. Please come prepared to be useful. All adults who spend the night must meet all GSHPA guidelines for registration and clearances.
Cost is $45 for girls which includes cost of Legacy rental, Journey supplies and activities, all food, and the Journey Badges (which are $6 each) and $15 for adults (to cover cost of food and Legacy rental).
